49ers vs. Raiders

Photo source:  Me and my Blackberry...my seats weren't bad, huh? :)

The title of this post should have been enough warning for me to stay away from this pre-season 1 game match-up battle of the Bay.  The battle wasn't so much between the actual professional ballers...but between the fans as was evidenced by the headlines that came out of that game.

I didn't think too much of it when my college BFF innocently texted me with "I got free season holder tickets for the 49'ers/Raiders game next Saturday at Candlestick.  Wanna go?"  Uh sure.  I had that Saturday free, and I hadn't been to a professional football game since I was 16...and even then it was really to perform with my high school marching band for the Chicago Bears halftime show and not actually to watch the game.  Candlestick would be meeting its demise here shortly, and it would be a real shame if I'd never actually been to the park once before it goes.  Look at me rationalizing.  I'm good at that.  Rationalizing a situation.

My only hesitation was that it would could get nasty out in the stands quickly....especially with the alcohol that I imagined was being consumed tailgating before a 5pm game...

My above concern was not alleviated as I made my way from the parking lot to the stadium passing a plethora of empty beer, vodka and whiskey bottles along the way.  Chants and trash talking between the fans getting louder and louder...

My BFF and I were there for all of 2 quarters really...the middle ones :)  After witnessing 2 large fights in the stands where multiple arrests were made and police escorting a very drunk man out of our reserved row, we were more than done.  As we made our way around the stadium to the exit in the direction of our car...a few more fights and lots more handcuffed individuals were witnessed.  Yeah, it was time to go.  Apparently there was a bathroom beating and a shooting in the parking lot after the game, which we didn't witness - thank goodness!

I'll say this - I'm glad I love people watching because outside of the potential danger I could have found myself in, this was prime viewing and highly entertaining.
