Life....Take Me Away....

I'm not afraid of work.  I'm not afraid to work hard, work long, work, work, work.  What I am afraid of is the prospect of the long, hard work being constantly extended...where there is no end in light at the end of the tunnel.  This is what I'm facing right now as I sit here in a conference room at 9:30pm with a team of people, unsure of when the end of tonight is - let alone the end of this project.  I'm just exhausted.  This is what I do when I'm exhausted and all I can do is dream of my pillow instead of showing it some quality time.  I vent.  I may shed some tears. I mentally start making plans to escape to parts unknown the second this job is over.  So please bear with me.  There's bound to be more whining before this thing is over.  You know what the kicker is?  I sought out this project.

All I Want Is My Bed....

So I've started this new project back at a firm I previously worked before.  Tons of hours - will be great money, etc.  The thing is, it's my first week working after the whole training thing they've had us do...and I'm sick.  Full on - stuffy head, runny nose and body that feels like a semi ran over it, backed up and run over it again.  So not a good time, but let's just pray that I get all the sickness out of the way this week and the only thing I need to be concerned with for the rest of my tenure on this project is the lack of sleep.  Speaking of sleep...I could really use some of that right now too...

Gladys Knight & Ron Winan's Chicken & Waffles

When I found out I was going to need to go to Atlanta for work about a month ago, my stomach lept with joy.  There is nothing this foodie enjoys more than southern cooking.  In fact my favorite meal in the world - fried catfish and hushpuppies - is a southern specialty.  However, last week also happened to be the timing of the great icing of Atlanta.  The entire city shut down with the snow and ice that blanketed the city and surrounding areas.  I was lucky to be on one of the few flights that made it in the city.  Luckily on the last night of my short visit, the roads were clear enough for business to re-open and for taxi drivers to be agreeable enough to take us to where we wanted to go.  Since we only had one night left in the city, where is it I wanted to go?  Well, you read the title of this blog post, right? :)

The restaurant is in downtown Atlanta.  Since I'm not familiar with the area any longer - the last time I was there I was 3 years old - I'm not altogether sure of the area or the traditions of the south.  However, when "No Weapons Allowed" is posted next to the usual postings on faces of restaurants and there's a bouncer type security guard at the entrance of the restaurant, I think it's safe to say that the restaurant may not be located in the best part of downtown.

Okay, down to the important stuff.  There were chicken & waffles on the menu, and grits, and squash casserole and black eyed peas and cabbage and sweet potatoes and....a whole host of other yummy food options that I only wish I had additional time to go back to try.  So here's what I ordered:

That's a pecan waffle you're looking at along with four really yummy and well season fried chicken wings.  Of course, I also had to order a couple of sides, which came on a large plate to accommodate the sides ordered by other members of my eating party.  From left to right are green beans (well seasoned but a bit too salty for my taste), cheese grits (not specifically on the menu, but when asked if I wanted cheese, I looked at the server as if I was asking if there was any other way to eat them) and squash casserole.

Almost all of the people I went with thoroughly enjoyed their first foray into southern food.  I say "almost all," because there was one vegetarian who was also allergic to eggs...and didn't like green vegetables, so she's up shit creek most of the time anyway when trying to go to a restaurant.  I really wanted to try the sweet potato cheesecake, but...well you saw the buffet of food on the table.  There was no way to fit it in.  I guess there's always next time...  :)  Because there WILL be a next time!
