Michael Jackson - There Will Never Be Another You

It was 1983. I was 8 years old. I had special permission from my parents to stay up past my bedtime to watch Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever. We were living in southern California at the time, and I waited patiently on the floor in front of the TV with my knees tucked in my Strawberry Shortcake nightgown for a certain singer to appear. The second the first beats came through the speakers of the television, I was up on my feet. I couldn't help it.

There are moments in life that are significant enough that you remember every detail. This night, this performance, was one such moment for me. Because when this man took the stage for those 5 minutes, everything I thought I enjoyed about music turned into something more powerful that I could not have predicted. This is when the music of my generation was defined. This is the moment when the soundtrack of my life began.

Michael, there will never be another you. The loss is great and my heart is heavy. May you rest in peace.

20 Life Lessons I Learned in My 20’s

Since I've been pretty distracted with my midwest "tour" coming up this weekend, Twitter, and life in general to be really good about blogging on here, I thought I would share with you a blog post I came across and LOVED. It's everything I've been sharing with people in my life, but combined into one nice comprehensive list.

Please give a big round of applause to Marc at MarcandAngel.com, a new favorite blog, for allowing me to repost this gem here.

Read it, sit with it, and pass it along. It's well worth it.

20 Life Lessons I Learned in My 20's

1. If you're smiling right now, you're doing something right.
2. It's not so much what you say that counts, it's how you make people feel.
3. The biggest mistake you can make is doing nothing because you're scared to make a mistake.
4. No matter how it turns out, it always ends up just the way it should be. Either you succeed or you learn something. Win-win.
5. Freedom is the greatest gift. Selff-sufficiency is the greatest freedom.
6. If you catch yourself working hard and loving every minute of it, don't stop. You're onto something big. Because hard work ain't hard when you concentrate on your passions.
7. It's not about getting a chance, it's about taking a chance. You'll rarely be 100% sure it will work. But you can always be 100% sure doing nothing won't work. Sometimes you just have to go for it.
8. Complaining is like slapping yourself for slapping yourself. It doesn't solve the problem, it just hurts you more.
9. The one with nothing to hide is always the one left standing tall.
10. You can press forward long after you can't. It's just a matter of wanting it bad enough.
11. There's a big difference between knowing and doing. Knowledge is basically useless without action.
12. In work and business, when they need you more than you need them, you have succeeded.
13. Everything that happens in life is neither good nor bad. It just depends on your perspective.
14. We are all weird. And life is weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we call it love.
15. True friendship and true love do sustain the tests of distance and time.
16. You can't change who you are. You can only change what you know and how you apply this knowledge.
17. It is okay to be angry. It is never okay to be cruel.
18. Even when you feel like you have nothing, someone else likely has far less. Find them and help them. You'll see why.
19. Having a thousand credentials on the wall will not make you a decent human being. But genuinely helping on person every day will.
20. Remember, change happens for a reason. Roll with it. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it.

And I leave you with this question:

How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?

The Color Purple

If you took one look at this blog, you might have noticed something. Okay, you might have noticed a few things, but one thing would probably be that my favorite color is purple or some variation of it. You would be correct. Everybody seems to have one color that they favor more than others, but is there a story behind it? A specific reason as to why they love that color so much? I do. It's a short one, but it's there.

As a little girl I was cute, I admit it. As I started getting older, I didn't get uglier or anything, but let's just say there was more of me to love. I'm sure this happens in a lot of families, but there was some light-hearted joking about my newfound roundness among the relatives, and family get-togethers started to become less and less enjoyable as I now had a reason to focus on something besides who I was as a person. My cousins seem to be able to eat ANYTHING and everything, and the roundness that was so easy for me to come by seemed to bypass them completely. That was unfortunate. That was when I started feeling less than.

Then at the age of 9 or 10, I dressed myself up in this really beautiful purple sweater and stepped out of my bedroom. My dad took one look at me, his eyes lit up and said, "You look really pretty in that color." I don't have memories of the exact expression on his face, but I can still hear his words if I listen really hard. This was a big deal because he was not one to comment a lot on my looks. I always felt beautiful in his presence but not because he told me I was.

I've never felt so beautiful in my life from someone else's reaction to my appearance. I hope one day to have a love that will look at me that way, but that original look will be awfully tough to compete with.

Do you have a story behind what makes your favorite color your favorite color?

Nothing Better...Let's Get This

If I wasn't sure I wanted kids before watching this Vlog from Joe, that question has now been answered. This is the most adorable thing I've seen in a long time, and what better advertisement of the importance of reading than this? Seriously folks, if you are heading to a New Kids on the Block show this summer, please help the Let's Get This Foundation by bringing a brand new children's book (or 5), appropriate for ages 0-5 with you. In return, you will receive a voucher to download an original song called, "Five Brothers and A Million Sisters," that you will only be able to get through the foundation. If you don't want to lug the book(s) to the concerts, then please head to the Let's Get This Foundation website and donate there. You will be able to receive the download of the song immediately after the donation. Let's Get This!

I Love You

Tonight I went go see My Life in Ruins, fully intending to walk out of there and write a movie review on here.  Instead I'm left in awe of life and how no matter what is going on, you always get what you need exactly when you need it.

My Life in Ruins is a romantic comedy starring Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding acclaim.  Unfortunately, "My Life" doesn't even come close to the charm of that movie.  Cute, but I wouldn't write home about it, or in this case a full blog post.

What I did want to express is this:  romantic comedies being what they are, well there's a boy and a girl and a conflict of some sort, but they end up together in the end and ladah de dah, smooch smooch, and the movie is over.  I would have been fine and not given it another thought had the male lead not given Nia this look at the end.  This look that I'm not sure I remember ever getting from someone I really wanted to get it from, and it made my heart ache.  It's a familiar ache.  One that has possibly been there my entire lifetime, as if I had come into this world looking for him from birth, missing him.

So I'm walking out of the theater.  My Blackberry had been buzzing with tweets, emails, texts, etc. throughout the movie.  I set it up to get certain tweets sent to me as text messages to my phone.  All 5 NKOTB are set up to do that, of course, as well as a few other select folks. However, all tweets set up to work that way don't always make it to my phone as text messages as the boys tweet.  I can't even begin to express how annoying that is...except for tonight.  You see tonight, it worked in my favor.  Tonight when I checked my text messages, I only had one from Donnie - though I knew there must have been more that he tweeted.  He's very grandiose most of the time in his tweets, but not with this particular tweet.

So quick recap:  walking out of theater, heart really aching with the missing romance of a love that I've yet to have, checking tweets from the boys, and only one from Donnie made it to my text messages...this is what it said:

You get what you need when you need it.  I know this was being sent to 65K followers.  But for 1 second, on my phone as a text, it was to me.  Thank you, Donnie, and I love you too.  :-)

Peace, Love & Books

Before I go on to discuss what Joe is talking about in the video below, can I just say that this Vlog just makes me wanna hug him.  So adorable and wait for it at the end because it's worth it!

So step 1 of Joe's new foundation "Let's Get This Foundation," is a book drive for children ages 0-5.  If you're going to a NKOTB show this summer, please bring a brand new book that's age appropriate to the show.  In return, Joe has recorded a beautiful song for all the Blockheads titled, "5 Brothers, 1 Million Sisters," for which you will receive a voucher to download.  If you would rather donate books online and receive the song instantly, you can do that too at the following link:  https://www.firstbook.org/site/c.lwKYJ8NVJvF/b.5213667/k.964B/Let8217s_Get_This/apps/ka/sd/donor.asp?
